This book is an excellent, well written and thoroughly researched book that deals for once and forever with all the prejudices on Daoism. It's a must read for anybody, scolar and amateur alike, who is interessed in Daoism or the the Daoist classics. It will help you to examine your own prejudices and where they come from. It will change your view on the Dao De Jing, Zhuangzi and other classics for ever. The book follows the timeline of Chinese and Daoist history and describes in the meantime the reception in the Western world. It sometimes reads like a thriller about a Catholic-Confucian conspiracy to hide the real importance of Daoism to us ignorant westerners. In short it's a great pleasure to read.
