Discusses the most recent advances in oncology, and provides firsthand reports of the significant progress being made in the field. The contributors are all either personally responsible for these advances or directly involved with their implementation in clinical settings. All the topics are chosen for their timeliness and importance for potential clinical applicability. Identified and carefully presented so that you can, in once source, gain authoritative knowledge of the many new and exciting leads coming from laboratory and clinical research applicable to the cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This series of text, now in its 8th year, has tracked substantial advances in cancer research. Themes have emerged that carry over from edition to edition. The discovery of oncogenes was followed by the description of their function and now, in this edition, their influence on the control of the cell cycle as it relates to uncontrolled growth. Mechanisms of drug resistance and the development of biologics as therapeutics, as well as the advances in the adjuvant therapy of cancer have appeared in different forms through several editions. This year biologic therapy has advanced to gene therapy and focus is now on a different form of multidrug resistance related to topoisomerase-drug interactions.
