Epstein is a great short story writer. In this book consisting of about a dozen short stories of Chicago Jews who come from all walks of life he spins tales that intrigue and amaze. The best one is the first one which contrasts the life attitudes of two old geezers who live in a retirement home. It turns out that one man named Shindler is a pessimist and misanthrope who sees life as a half empty glass while Felix-(note: the latin for happy) has had a life of singular adversity but has an optimistic outlook.
The ending is sad but spectacular ! Quite a lot from two old geezers ! David A R
