There are plenty of options here which will be quite useful in teaching the scope of British Literature in one semester. I also like the discussion on the history of the English language, as well as the introductory essays for each of the periods and authors.

Interesting Companion to Anthology
The extra material on the companion disc to Norton's Anthology of English Literature is full of interesting music, fun facts, and loads of other fascinating material. It makes for a good audio/visual component to bring into the classroom, as well.

Don't go to College without it!
An old favorite & a new friend -- the Norton Anthology is required for many College level courses for a good reason. Every major writer is represented, as well as literary periods & historical context. Technical terms are defined & ample footnotes for individual works are provided. And wait ! don't throw it away when you graduate. Hang on to it for casual browsing & reference.
