"The Capable Cruiser" is a logical extension of the Pardeys' "The Self-Sufficient Sailor" (978-0964603677), with more emphasis on seamanship underway, including careful analysis of extreme anchoring situations and solutions for mitigating them. Underlying each and every chapter is the warmth and encouragement that spurred Herb McCormick, former editor of "Cruising World" magazine, to label Lin and Larry Pardey 'the enablers.' This revised and expanded third edition of a cruising classic includes 10 completely new chapters with such advice as: 16 ways to encourage your lover (partner) to share your dream; strategies for turning sudden engine failure into a minor incident; choosing safety equipment and repairing rigging at sea. All of the original chapters have been updated to ensure that the information will be helpful for everyone who dreams of cruising-whether now or in the near future.

This book is in many ways similar to many others in the same vein. Any book on any subject contains the personal prejudices of the author. With their history and resume, the Pardey's have a slant on cruising unique to their experiences and a prospective cruiser would do well to benefit from it. Don Street, Adlard Coles, the Hiscocks, the Roths and many others also have much to offer, enough so that I would suggest this book as one of many to absorb before setting out. Also, before accepting any particular opinion regarding heavy weather re heaving to vs running before, vs a sea anchor, educating oneself on the type of hull and it's behavior that one intends to use and then trying the method out before the extreme weather necessitating it is of extreme importance. A full keel boat with the mast forward will normally respond differently than say, a cutter with the same hull, and some fin keels won't heave to reliably at all, so find these things out yourself once you know which is which.
