A history book that reads like crime novel
History can be very boring. Lots of dates and names to remember. However in his book, "In the Shadow of the Sword", Tom Holland manages to cover distances and dates with ease and paints a scene of ancient times that is as fascinating as a crime novel. And as bloody, too! The author manages to present a huge amount of information while writing a easy to read manner. Despite the title, more than half the book covers developments in the Middle East prior to the founding of Islam. Anyone interested in understanding Islam, Arab culture and the rise of religions in this barren part of the world will enjoy this book. I couldn't quite finish it in one session but it was difficult to put down.
