In this compelling narrative, the Seven Years' War -- long seen as a mere backdrop to the American Revolution -- takes on a whole new significance. This is the preeminent work on the French & Indian War in North America, and informs the reader in a scholarly fashion how this melds into the Seven Years War in Europe and the world. Heavy on scholarship and on complex political, cultural and financial underpinnings of what has been largely ignored in America's history teachings. Makes clear the seminal role of this "minor" war in the later American revolution and the Revolutionary War that ultimately freed our country. This is not light, adventuresome reading ... though it is certainly full of adventures: George Washington, Christopher Gist, Benjamin Franklin, Daniel Morgan, Robert Rogers (of Ranger fame)--these are all major players on Anderson's stage, as, indeed, they were in the mid 1700s. An historical "must read."

The Names of Things
Fred Anderson's book is a good piece of work. I do wonder at the synopsis though, describing the French and Indian War as being known as "the Seven Years War in Europe".
A fascinating assertion. I would have thought the reverse was true. The French and Indian War was thought of as a sideshow. Sorry guys but it didn't rate all that highly at the time. There were far bigger things happening in Europe..
