Excerpt from Deutsche Sprachlehre Fr Anfnger Accidence, Syntax and Etymology. Special care has been bestowed upon the sections referring to the strong and weak declensions and conjugations, to the modal auxiliaries, the infinitives and participles, the subjunctive and indicative moods, and to word-formation and construction. Throughout the entire work much attention has been paid to the typo graphical arrangement of the subject-matter. Difierent forms of type, an abundance of tables, synopses, and com parative representations, are intended to assist the visual memory of the student, and to impress fundamental principles upon the mind. The condensed representations of the main features of declension and conjugation, as found on pages 140 - 143 and 192-197, are meant for all the lessons save the very first. As soon as the beginner's vocabulary allows, the teacher should explain these tables, and teach him to use them as a constant guide in the midst of the bewildering mass of forms. In this way the view of the whole will never be lost in the struggle for mastery over the details. In the Zweite Stufe disconnected sentences are used only here and there for illustrations, while every grammatical principle is elucidated by means of Sprachstiicke. In the Dritte Stufe, Dichterworte or quotations from poets and prose-writers take the place of the sprachsmcke; each quotation presents in its completeness a beautiful, serious, or humorous thought worth remembering. It is believed that the book contains abun dant material to meet the demands of the advanced entrance requirements in German grammar as fixed by the leading colleges. In order to keep this work within reasonable lim its, the exercises ih Prose Composition belonging to the second and third grades will be embodied in a separate vol ume entitled German Prose Composition.
