From the Introduction some pages of a detailed and technical character have been omit ted, while an account of Schiller's life has been inserted. There is retained the sketch of the main outlines of the great classical period of German literature, with the purpose of suggesting Tell's broad literary background, and of awaken ing interest in the rich treasures of the literature of Ger many. The Notes have been largely rewritten. They are appropriately full and retain the feature of occasional sug gestive running comments upon the development of action in the various scenes.
