If, serious in his desire to get hold of the wisest, wittiest, fruitfullest, and ever-fresh writings, he tries to find them, he will be balked a hundred times by books that tell about them, and make a mince-meat of them, before he will grasp their actual selves. The universal classics are those books that are works. On lower planes are the multitude Of books that are mostly words. The volumes and documents comprised in this series may be likened to a life-boat launched to save the bewil dered struggler from peril of being submerged. The question for every builder of a home library worthy of the name is rather what to leave than what to have, to discriminate between books worth possessing because of their lasting merit, and those whose interest fades when once read.
