I well remember, says Hayne, the exultation with which he showed me one morning his earliest consecutive attempt at verse-making. Our down east schoolmaster, however, could boast of no turn for sentiment, and having remarked us hobnobbing, meanly assaulted us in the rear, effectually quenching, for the time, all aesthetic enthusiasm.
