The subject of the play is Joash acknowledged and placed on the throne, and I ought, in accordance with the rules, to have entitled it Joash. But most people having heard it spoken of only under the name of Athaliah, I did not think it desirable to present it to them under another title; also, because Athaliah plays so important a part in it, and because it is her death which ends the play.
