Excerpt from A Treatise on the Law of Libel and the Liberty of the Press: Showing the Origin, Use, and Abuse of the Law of Libel; With Copious Notes and References to Authorities in Great Britain and the United States; As Applicable Individuals and to Political and Ecclesiastical Bodies and Principles Those who are averse to have their own opin ions examined, are manifestly actuated more by attachment to their own tenets than to truth. They arrogate for themselves a privilege which they deny to their neighbor; and they suggest the suspicious inquiry - IS there any concealed interest in the back ground that causes discus sion to be dreaded and opposed! I intend, therefore, upon the present occasion, to maintain the right OF free discussion, in its fullest extent: as applied to any and every ques tion, opinion, or doctrine, political, theological, moral, metaphysical, or philosophical, within the widest range of human inquiry: and I trust I Shall Show, that the cause of truth, and the inte rest of the public, requires the free and full exer cise of the right now claimed: and that in all times and places, those who have, been so anxious to throw fetters around the human intellect, have had no other motive for so doing, than to keep the persons, and the property of their fellow men, more completely within their own control.
