'Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies ...' A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified 'dinery server' on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation - the narrators of "Cloud Atlas" hear each other's echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small. In his extraordinary third novel, David Mitchell erases the boundaries of language, genre and time to offer a meditation on humanity's dangerous will to power, and where it may lead us.

Thought Provoking
Perhaps the most amazing thing about this book is that only one person wrote it, although it reads like four very different authors were involved. Cloud Atlas works on a variety of levels, incorporating complex themes, history, science fiction, and these amazing character voices- all of whom are connected by a slender thread that would be trite in the hands of any other writer. It may take you a few pages to get into the flow of each character's voice, but it will be time well spent!

A Novel with sky high quality
Mitchell provides us with a beautifully rich and varied language. His vivid imagination, ultimatley about power and domination, propels us into six different worlds. His Russian doll is then weaved together to provide a thought provoking novel about mankind. Compelling reading.
