Excerpt from Memoirs of David Nasmith: His Labours and Travels in Great Britain, France, the United States, and Canada Author might, perhaps, offer in explanation rather than apology, his diversified and onerous pastoral duties, duties paramount to all others, how adapted soever to instruct the churches, and promote the general good of mankind; and to these he might add the endless demands of public business on a metropolitan minister, in this busy age. But these are, of course, obstacles common to all literary undertakings by men placed in the Author's circumstances. As the chief cause of delay, therefore, he has only to allege the peculiar difficulty of the work. The materials were Widely diffused, and scattered throughout a mingled mass, which required much toil in collection, in analysis, in sifting, and in assortment, before the work of composi tion began. Two volumes, of equal size, might have been produced with much less labour. Here there is no wholesale publication of letters, often empty and worthless, which gives so loose, so spongy, so vapid, and so valueless a character to much of our modern Religious Biography. Every letter and every document has been closely scrutinized, and diligent search made for such matter as was essential to the point in hand, or to the general subject; this was extracted, and everything else rejected.
