Excerpt from Leaves From the History of Welsh Nonconformity in the Seventeenth Century: Being Chiefly the Autobiography of Richard Davies of Welshpool Quaker (1636-1708) There is now no meeting held in Wales or its borders, corresponding to those of the Primitive Quakers; there are, however, several in South Wales and Herefordshire, under the care of the Society which is usually credited with the Quaker name and with carrying on their work. In the matter of religion, names go for very little when a Church calls' itself Catholic and Apostolic, we look for proof of Catholicity, and for a manifestation of the same essential fruits of Christianity as characterized Apostolic times, just so, when any name with command ing greatness is introduced to characterize a set of doctrines or a profession of Christianity, it is the duty of all honest seekers after Truth to take nothing upon trust. In fact it was never the intention of its Divine founder that Christianity should be propagated on those con ditions. He that is of God heareth us, said the Apostle, and he that is not of God heareth us not. The best work of the last half of the 17th century was entitled by one who participated in it to be, Primitive Christianity revived, and its claims to-day rest on the assent of the enlightened spiritual understanding. He that is of God he whose spiritual ears are Divinely opened, hears those early testimonies and honours them, so to - day, he that is not of God, or is ruled by the wisdom that is from beneath not from above, may seemto assent; but those that are actuated by it have no true knowledge, no true faith, - they do not hear aright. So there may be those now drawn by the inward Witness for Truth to livingly receive somewhat of true faith as to Gospel worship, and desirous of finding such as hold meetings in the same faith as Richard Davies and his friends. If such come in contact with Societies or meetings where a profession of it is made, but find that the ground or foundation is in reality that of the In dependents from whom R. D. Came out, and which is substantially the same in all the prominent sects to - day, let not these conclude that spiritual worship is either an empty phrase or as much at the command of the creature as singing a hymn in a so-called Evangelistic meeting.
