A. Auf. Die chemische Arbeit innerhalb der Pflanze muss also, wenigstens der Hauptsache nach, eine Synthese sein aber es kommen in ihr daneben in grossem Umfange auch Reduktions prozesse vor. Durch die lebendige Kraft des Sonnenlichtes wird n�mlich in den grunen Theilen der Pflanze aus der Kohlens�ure und dem Wasser Sauer stoff abgespalten und diese Reduktion wird allgemein als Ausgangspunkt der folgenden Synthesen betrachtet. In erster Linie soll n�mlich hierbei Formaldehyd entstehen, co2 h2o=ch20]o2, welcher darauf durch Kondensation in Zucker �bergeht, der dann zum Aufbau anderer Stoffe dient. Die lebendige Kraft der Sonne, welche die obige Spaltung bewirkt, geht jedoch dabei nicht verloren; sie geht nur in eine andere Kraftform, in die potentielle Energie oder chemische Spannkraft des freien Sauerstofles einerseits und der durch Synthese entstandenen sauerstofl'�rmeren Verbindungen andererseits �ber.
