Excerpt from A Phonographic and Pronouncing Vocabulary of the English Language In deciding between two or more pronunciations, countenanced by orthoepists, or by unwritten respectable usage, that one has been chosen which, when expressed by the English Phonetic Alphabet, makes the nearest approach to the romanic spelling. In this the author has been actuated by a conviction that the written English language is now in a transition state, passing from the romanic to a phonetic orthography; and he acknowledges no other right in these matters than prescription. In unaccented syllables that are supposed to be pronounced in different ways by different persons, he has preferred to abide by romanic usage. In this no offence will be given except to extremists, whose views, if adopted, would give offence to all but them selves. To attempt to disturb the established orthography on points about which orthoepists themselves differ in opinion, would be highly injurious to the interests of Phonetic Spelling.
