Excerpt from The Collected Works of Edward Sapir, Vol. 8: Takelma Texts and Grammar Volumes I through VI of The Collected Works of Edward Sapir are devoted mainly to shorter papers, for the most part reprinted from journals and collec tions; by contrast, Volumes VII through XV are devoted to longer works of monographic nature - grammars, dictionaries, text collections, and extended ethnographic accounts. Many of these were published by Sapir during his life time; others were edited by his students and published after his death; still others have only now been edited and are published here for the first time. The organization of each volume in this latter group brings together, in most instances, works on a single language and culture; in a few volumes, however, the unifying element is one of linguistic family or culture area. This volume contains the two major publications on Takelma that resulted from Sapir's second field trip, in 1906: Takelma Texts of 1909, and The Takelma Language of Southwestern Oregon, which first appeared in 1912. In addition, a reinterpretation by Dell Hymes of the first narrative in Takelma Texts is printed here for the first time.
