VOLUME ONE OF THE BORDER TRILOGY John Grady Cole is the last bewildered survivor of long generations of Texas ranchers. Finding himself cut off from the only life he has ever wanted, he sets out for Mexico with his friend Lacey Rawlins. Befriending a third boy on the way, they find a country beyond their imagining: barren and beautiful, rugged yet cruelly civilized; a place where dreams are paid for in blood. All The Pretty Horses is an acknowledged masterpiece and a grand love story: a novel about childhood passing, along with innocence and a vanished American age. Steeped in the wisdom that comes only from loss, it is a magnificent parable of responsibility, revenge and survival. `A darkly shining work . . . executed with consummate skill and much subtlety - the effect is magnificent' John Banville, Observer `A uniquely brilliant book . . . told in language as subtly beautiful as its desert setting. One of the most important pieces of American writing of our time' Stephen Amidon, Sunday Times

All The Pretty Horses - Must read
This was a wonderful read. The times, the country and the attitudes of the times were brought to life like no other book I've read. I was relaxed during some of it, on the edge of my chair some of it, and wistful throughout.

looks good
The item seems to be what it was represented to be...I haven't gone through it with a fine-toothed-comb - but all looks good.

Disappointing book
I had heard about the 'Border trilogy' and decided to obtain copies in order to enjoy a good read. I am afraid that when measured up against such a classic as Lonesome Dove I found the book All The Pretty Horses to be a fairly boring read and became very frustrated by the insertion of conversations in Spanish. I am currently reading The Crossing, another of the books in the trilogy and this suffers from the same fault.
So far I have found the books to be overated.

All the Pretty Horses Galloped Away
I read this book due to the recommendations of my favorite book reviewer, my wife. I was truly amazed that I found it pedestrian. The casual lack of use of no quotation marks and throwing in Spanish with no translations made it frustrating and in places totally incoherent. His character development was still very good in spite of the of the language problem. If you speak and read Spanish it may be a better read, but if you don't, I wouldn't bother with this book.
