THE NARROWS is not the best book to read if this is the reader?s first experience with Michael Connelly. This author, like many others, has an ongoing story about the main and some secondary characters. Please look at the booklist below.
I would recommend reading the books with the double asterisk in order: THE POET > BLOOD WORK > A DARKNESS MORE THAN NIGHT > THE NARROWS. There are so many references to the previous books; most new readers will be aggravated that they do not grasp their significance in the current book.
?The Poet? is back! He?s the diabolical serial murderer that started his career in the FBI; thus, he knows all the tricks and knows how the FBI thinks. Now, Terry McCaleb, an ex-FBI profiler and serial killer expert, has died.
His wife wants Harry Bosch to investigate because the blood work from the autopsy shows that McCaleb did NOT have any of the critical medicines in his blood stream at the time of his death. These medicines helped his transplanted heart to function ? without them, he died.
McCaleb?s business partner and his wife assure Harry that Terry was religious about taking his meds. Terry kept his old files (unsolved cases) and regularly worked them in his spare time. As Harry works his way through those cases, he realizes that Terry was on the Poet?s trail.
This is a taut drama with lots of dead-ends and twists. The pacing is excellent; I had to finish it because I couldn?t put it down. 5 STARS

twists & turns
This book was full of twists and turns. It was pretty cool, well written, and noticeing that it had 2 people who were lead characters who worked well w/each other to hunt down this perp only made it even better than I thought it would be. I have to say tho that the suspense slowed a bit whenever the "red tapers" come into play and tries to stop them from getting to the truth sooner. Otherwise it moved along well. I appreciated it and will most likely find another of Michaels' books to read. Usually auhors of this calliber only get better book after book.

Good Book
I really enjoyed this book, just as I enjoyed its prequel, The Poet. Connelly is an excellent writer and I enjoy all he does.

CONNELLY'S MOST ENERGIZED NOVEL TO DATE
I found The Narrows to be Michael Connelly's best work to date. I love Harry Bosch's complex character, his patient, methodical following of clues and his dealing with bureaucratic obstacles. He's come to feel like an old friend. Harry Bosch is now at the peak of his crime fighting form in this compelling, frightening, and downright shocking thriller, as he squares off against Connelly's most infamous villain, The Poet. Not only does Bosch-- along with Rachel Walling-- try to outwit a brilliant killing machine, he manages to balance the investigation with poignant attempts to bond with his newly discovered daughter, as well as pay a debt owed to a deceased friend. Connelly has produced the creepy, cunning killer he is famous for and, at the same time , has weaved plausible human drama into the story line. I would definitely rate The Narrows as excellent. It is crime fiction at its gutsy best.
