Eleanor Cameron has captured the magical feel of childhood in her Mushroom Planet books. If two boys can build a spaceship (which only needs a motor and some special fuel to work), then anything is possible... even the existence of a small planet nearby that no one has discovered yet. Except for a a strange little man who seems to know a lot about this planet of mushroom people, and who places an ad in the paper for a spaceship to be built by some local boys. Not grownups, mind you, but children. And when Chuck and David deliver their homemade ship to Mr. Bass, he installs the rocket motor, fuel and oxygen generator, and sends the boys on their way to an adventure in outer space! The illustrations by Robert Henneberger are amazing, and manage to capture the dreamy feel of the narrative perfectly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who still has an imagination, young or old. A nice read on a rainy day.
