Perhaps this is meant for junior high kids?
These co-authors must know their audience, but count me out.
It's been a huge waste of my time.
Fortunately it's a paperback, so I can just chuck it.

Five hours in the tub - must read
I was given a copy by a friend who knows I enjoy a good suspenseful thrilling novel. I left 'Step on a Crack' sitting on my "too read" pile for a few months. I do my best reading in the tub before putting the kids to bed. What a read! The quick action was fast right from the start to the very end. Patterson writes in a style that is very easy to follow yet you are constantly faced with little sub-plots that add so favorably to the bigger stew of the main plot. Patterson's story is quite believable and his research of the locations is quite accurate. All of my senses were effected. I felt the pain, sadness, anger, fear, joy, and rejoicing as if I were there. I think those Catholics looking for a good read would be especially drawn to this one. My wife ended up putting the kids to bed and I got out of my tub 5 hours later with a finished book and a whole lot of tub water wrinkles.

I have been a James Patterson fan for many years. I anxiously await the latest publication, and spend hours at a time lost in his work. However, this book was the very first disappointment I have had. It appeared that the authors were trying to continue the Alex Cross concept, but with a weaker character, and no connection to his life or professional/personal conflicts. Essentially, the entire book is about a hostage situation, and the prisoners are an elite group that elicits little sympathy from the reader. Bottom line, if you like murder mystrey detective stories, skip this book and pick up the latest Harlan Coben.

one of his best
Step On a Crack is one of the books I have read from start to finish, almost without putting it down! It was funny, sad and I didn't have to wait for a new book to find out if they got the "bad guy"I hope Mr. Patterson does bring his new character back in future books.. I have read the Alex Cross and Bird Kid books and the Murder Club books and this character also has a unique personality readers will love..
