On the positive side this is a useful word study tool because various meanings of words are presented without having to be looked up online or by flipping pages to the back. There is another bible called the keyword bible that also shows different meanings but that one requires flipping back and forth. The formal equivalence and synonyms for keywords in this version make obscure passages easier to understand while simple passages may be less clear. I would like it if this included Strong's numbers. While studying Heb 1:3 I found it called Jesus the "sole representation" of God bust most translations render it "exact representation" and I cannot find justification for rendering charakt?r as "sole" representation .

Great version!
The AMP version is great. Only thing that I dislike from this purchase was that it reeks of smoke. The person who had it before me must have smoked like 10 packs a day. My hands smell of smoke after I am done picking up this Bible and reading it. I wish that the description would have mentioned that. No wonder the leather version was so cheap.

A neat study Bible
If you haven't seen the Amplified Bible, you can take a look at it on line here http://www.biblegateway.com/ where the text of this translation is on line, along with many others.
This translation is unique in my experience because it adds connotative information on different words and phrases which would, the editors believe, have been apparent to the original reader/hearer. This connotative material appears in parenthesis or brackets, imbedded in the main text.
Because of this the bonus material is immediately accessible and reads as part of the text. No jumping your eyes back and forth to footnotes.
In my Sunday School class we are very interested in the language of scripture as it would have been understood by the original audience, so this has been a lot of fun for us.
Sometimes the material is just interesting, but occasionally it is startling and makes me look at the text and context in a new light.
I am looking forward to exploring the Amplified Bible for many years and it has quickly become my main study Bible.
Do follow the link above and do a little exploring in this translation. That is the only way you can really begin to appreciate it.
