Mostly from Lady Antonia Fraser's diaries, with freshly written pieces inbetween, this book is about the warm, sincere, romantic love story, possibly the most romantic love story of these times, of Harold Pinter and Lady Antonia Fraser. It is not for the faint-hearted, because it ends in Harold Pinter's death from liver cancer (after winning a battle over oesophageal cancer), and the last pages are the equivalent for the reader, of climbing a particularly high windswept hill on a blustery day.
But their love story has never been bettered by Hollywood: he writes her love poems throughout their marriage. She watches him on many stages being Harold Pinter and speaking out forthrightly for human rights. He is obviously her knight in shining armour. She is obviously the love and light of his life.
They are gracious people, living their lives busily and richly with her children and later many grandchildren in a life of good conversation, poetry readings and fun.
It didn't begin this way: there was Britain's disapproval and shock when they left their respective spouses in order to be together. But it's a beautiful book. Her diary entries are interesting and pertinent so that it is as though you are there. It's also very moving and altogether worthwhile reading.
