These settlers relied heavily on the community to find, build and develop the areas of central Illinois. His book discusses the transformation of rural settlements, beginning in the early 19th century until the 1860s. As with many towns during this time, the emerging capitalist market drastically changed the landscape. This book is a well written narrative.
