The effect of his tyranny was great beyond all former example. He was universally detested and nothing preserved him but the dread of another revolution. When he went to the opera or to the playhouse, the mass of the people were quite silent, although a small claque in a corner made a slight clamour of applause. He was a little fat man, with what is called a pot - belly, - with a sallow, greasy - looking countenance like that of a butcher.
