Excerpt from Origin and Progress of the War Between England and China: A Lecture Taught as American citizens are, that man is endowed with the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; hav ing early learned, as we have, the lesson that it is the first duty of all governments to permit to each the pursuit of his own happiness in his own way, without intrusion from or molestation to others, we, cannot but regard the conduct of the Chinese Empire toward the other members of the great family of nations, as governed by a kin dred spirit.
