Scarce, highly regarded biography of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson (b. 1737), prominent member of American Revolution-era Philadelphia society, considered on of tyhe foremost women of letters of the period. She educated herself widely in literature, history, languages and wrote prolifically and published her poetry. Despite her achievments, her personal life was fraught with financial woes, bad romances (her father's forbade her marriage to Benjamin Franklin's illegitimate son) and treasonous plots due both to her marriage to a British loyalist who left before the Revolution as well as her own political indiscretions.
