D. 1591 1693 Having thus got as near to the actual penning by each author as possible, the extracts are arranged in chronological order; what may be lost by not grouping those from one writer together (which easily may be recovered by referring to the pages under each name in the Index) may be compensated by the consecutive view of these indications of opinion thus gained. In about twenty-five instances it is somewhat doubtful whether there is an allusion to Shakespere or to any of his works intended, and, following the suggestion of Mr. F urnivall, an asterisk of warning is affixed to each these, however, form but a small proportion of the whole three of them have been rescued from mistaken allusions (see Appendix D) four remain doubtful out of the half-dozen which were considered so in the first edition (those on pp. 1, 7, I3, and the rest have been inserted as affording various points of interest.
