Regarding it as a mere piece of impertinence for a person to obtrude a work upon the public, and then apologize for so doing, I shall offer no excuse on the part of my book, but allow it to take its chance with others, merely observing, that all the facts narrated are facts, although in some instances the scenes have been shifted, and the subordinate characters varied, for the sake of effect, just as a dramatist, by the judicious use of minor personages.
