Interrogative clauses differ from affirmative clauses in that a question has not in itself the completeness that belongs to a statement of fact, but waits for a reply. This peculiar incompleteness, expectancy, in uences the accentuation and, directly or in directly, the order of words. Wunderlich has pointed out the essential difference between principal and subordinate clauses. He says (p. 'in the principal clause consciousness and language work almost simultaneously; in the subordinate clause consciousness precedes speech. The principal clause builds itself up before the bearer in individual elements; the sub ordinate clause, on the other hand, introduces complete ideas with which the principal clause deals as with a unity.' This difference between principal and subordinate clauses has its in uence on the order of words. For the subordinate clause the most appropriate construction is the 'locked construction, ' the governing word, usually the verb, standing at the end. Such internal forces undoubtedly in uence word-order. An other potent in uence is the consideration of emphasis. This has usually been regarded as the most important in uence in determining the order of words. It is usually assumed that the first place in the sentence is the position of emphasis.
