In compiling this volume we have ever regarded the scrupulousness manifested by the late George Haines, M. D., in collecting the matter herein contained, as well as that of his nephew, the late George Haines, who so ably assisted him. In introducing this volume to the public, where it must come before the eye of the critic, we have no apology to offer; feeling that we have simply done that which was required at our hands in memory of him who in departing leaves a void which time alone can efface.
