A closely packed town, encircling a hill, and hugging in its secular embrace the group of ecclesiastical buildings which occupied the summit, was likely to give and take whenever the fiery element broke out in either department. Wood was plenty for the purposes of building, and the neigh bouring baronies of the Fens, as well as the numerous Der-rye in the low lands of the county, indicate by their names that vast supplies of that material lay near at hand.
