Excerpt from Sixty-Sixth Annual Report of the Trustees of the New York State Library: For the Year 1883 From January 1. 1878, to December 31, 1882, there were added five thousand four hundred and seventy-one volumes, making a total of thirty-four thousand one hundred and seventy-nine volumes, of which ten thousand volumes are estimated to comprise the collection of statute law and State papers, leaving twenty-four thousand as the number of volumes of law books embraced in this catalogue. The present volume has been prepared and published in pursuance of chapter 306 of the Laws of 1881, for the purpose of increasing the utility of the library. In its preparation, the librarian has had in mind the practical convenience of those who have occasion to consult the library, rather than any effort to construct a bibliographical model. Each volume is entered under some one of the subjects, and some volumes are entered several times under different subjects. Cross references have been freely made from general subjects to their various subordinate subjects and also to co-ordinate and illustrative subjects. The plan of short titles has been adopted. Under this plan, it will be readily seen, that each' entry must be read with reference to the subject under which it occurs, in order that the title may be fully understood.
