Happily, schools and colleges in France were no longer under the sway of the Jesuits. Young Etienne was sent to the University of the Oratorians at Lyons. It was a well-ordered institution. There were, with the professors and officers of the establishment, about a thousand inmates. The religious principles were those of the Jansenists. Corruption and levity were repressed, order and discipline were carefully maintained, and the literary advantages were of a high and varied nature.
