D., Late Missionary of the American Board at Mosul: Including the Early History of the Assyrian Mission IN an age when missionary enterprise is honored, as it never was before, by the entire Christian community, and when books of travel, and of geographical and antiquarian research, are eagerly welcomed by the reading public, no apology can be needful for the publication of a memoir which combines all these characteristics, the memoir of one who was at once a traveler and an antiquarian, an Oriental scholar and a Christian missionary; who carried the glad tidings of the gospel back to those regions where the human race was cradled in its infancy, and who, having done the work of a long life in a few years, at the early age Of twenty-eight, laid his worn and weary body down to its last rest on the banks of the Tigris. I only regret that the preparation of the memoir could not have been entrusted to better hands, and that it could not have been earlier accomplished. The causes which have, from year to year, prevented its more seasonable appearance, would be of no interest to the public.
