According to the 1916 mortality statistics of the U. S. Bureau of Censusl nephritis is only exceeded as a cause of death by pulmonary tuberculosis and organic disease of the heart. In the registration area in 1916, deaths from acute nephritis and Bright's disease were or per population. The figures for organic heart disease and for tuberculosis were and so that tuberculosis was not greatly more fatal than nephritis; all other conditions other than the two enumerated caused fewer deaths. It is of interest too that the rate per for nephritis is increasing as shown by the following: 191 1, 1912, 103; 1913, 1914, 1915, and 1916.
