Excerpt from The Establishments for the Blind in England: A Report to the Minister of the Interior and of Foreign Affairs Statistical researches prove that the immense majority of the blind belong to that class of society which has to get its living by labour. This fact is certain, and should exercise a great influence on the nature of an establishment to be formed for these unfortunate creatures. Another fact, no less certain, is that deprivation of sight does not make the blind unhappy. Their great unhappiness is caused by having to depend upon others for the primary needs of life, and by not knowing how to make their existence useful. The world has no less delight for them than for us, provided they can be useqy employed; and, if we were not so cruel as to remind them every moment of their misfortune by useless expressions of sympathy and compassion, they would not feel it.
