Caryl, who had been Sitting in the auto's back seat, appeared to be uninjured until X-rays revealed that he had broken both his nose and his jaw. The resultant drain on the family finances forced the boy's father to give up the Pasadena house and rent an apart ment in one of Glendale's poorer sections. After two years of living from hand to mouth, Mr. Chessman finally gave up and put his family on the relief rolls.
