Du domaine de la morphologie, nous passons dans celui de la syntaxe. Ainsi nous voyons en latin, � l'�poque pr�historique, les huit cas primitifs se r�duire � six, et certains adverbes, devenus pr�positions, remplir le r�le des flexions anciennes. Le latin vulgaire de la basse �poque poursuit l'oeuvre commenc�e, en �liminant le vocatif et les cas obliques. La lutte se poursuit au moyen �ge entre le cas - r�gime et le cas sujet, qui dispara�t � son tour. C'est par le m�me proc�d� que se sont form�s les comparatifs et superlatifs romans, et les temps p�riphrastiques ceux - ci remplacent des formes disparues, et surtout servent � exprimer des nuances nouvelles dans un idiome qui recherche de plus en plus la clart� et la pr�cision.
