Excerpt from The Prospective Advance of Christian Missions, Suggested by Present Lines of Movement of Christendom: Special Discourse Delivered Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, at Its Seventy-Fifth Anniversary, Boston, Mass., October 14, 1885 The missionary work carried On in the world under the leadership of the Divine Lord, in whatever is essential to its method, its instruments, or its contemplated scope, is set before us with immortal distinctness in the words of the Master, addressed to the apostles, and recorded in Acts I, viii: But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. The swift widening of the area of their duty before the apostles first impresses us as we ponder these words, and we recognize a Leader to whom spaces or times offer no limit as he opens to his followers majestic plans.
