Can a picture book be touching, funny, sad, hopeful and sweet without a single word? Yes, and this is it. Eloquently wordless, Blake's unique watercolours tell the story of a discarded toy who sets out not only to find a home for himself, but for his fellow playthings as well. How he ends up doing that makes for a very warm, but never mawkish, little tale. The contrast of behaviours between the different characters is remarkable, because they are allowed no dialogue. Blake's artwork may look slapdash, even scribbly, but it is surprisingly detailed and, I suspect, very carefully designed. There are pages radiating pure happiness in this lovely book. My kids like for me to 'tell them the story'. Well worth a - I was going to say read, but you can't, so I'll say, Well worth a look.
