Excellent writer!
This was the first book I read by Vladimir Voinovich and I then proceeded to read everything else he wrote. It was recommended to me by a Russian bookseller and is one of my favorites.
One must have a working knowledge of Soviet history to fully appreciate its satirical content and then the humor is quite funny. It is a style of writing I think is hard to master and Voinovich does it masterfully.
Slightly dated, since when he wrote the book, the country was still the USSR. But if you put yourself in that mindset, very enjoyable. He has written another dealing with Russia after the fall of communism called "Monumental Propaganda" that is just as good. When I read these books, I find myself laughing out loud throughout. Yet, when I put them down they also make me think. A brilliant writer!
