Beginning with an examination of equilibrium in familiar mechanical objects, the book gives a straightforward account of the factors that determine equilibrium in chemical systems. The underlying principles of thermodynamics are discussed, then applied to a wide range of physicochemical systems. The problems of non-ideal solutions and the concept of activity are covered, and the text offers a useful introduction to the molecular basis of thermodynamics. This new edition is fully illustrated, and features a clearer text design and larger format. Many new sample problems and worked examples are included. Students in thermodynamics will continue to find this popular book a clear introduction to an important subject.

Sir Brian manages, in this slim volume, to present the fundamental concepts of chemical thermodynamics in a concise manner that makes these complex ideas comprehensible to the undergraduate. As an aside, Sir Brian is an extremely nice man who almost didn't get the chance to write this book. when I was about 10 years old, he went for a short sail in my el toro with me in Tomales Bay and we were hit by a knockdown gust; breaking my tiller. It was at this point that I and my father found out that Sir Brian couldn't swim. All turned out happily; for our family and for Science.
