This illustrated volume provides an evocative record of the complex and volatile relationship that has linked Europe and the Arab world throughout history. The selection of 75 items from the libraries of the Arcadian Group includes some of the rarest works of literature on Arab culture to be published in Europe between the early 16th century and the end of World War II. Travel writing is well represented, but is balanced by other areas of interest including cartography and typography. Several editions of the Qur'an reflect the history of Orientalist scholarship in Europe. Transcriptions of title-page statements and details of ownership are also provided. Professor Alastair Hamilton of the University of Leiden has written a sympathetic account of the prejudices and illusions that have informed European minds about their Muslim neighbours from the Middle Ages to the present.
