During the economic boom of the 1950s and the 1960s and the more troubled times which followed, Australians confronted the challenge of surviving as an offshoot of European civilization in a largely Asian neighbourhood and of securing a prosperous future when Europe could no longer be depended on for markets and investment. This work shows how some Australians resisted the pressures for change, but how others adapted resourcefully and intelligently to the creation of a new nation able to survive into the 21st century.
