With a company of 101 and an astronomical budget, Lady in the Dark launched the career of a young nightclub performer named Danny Kaye and starred Gertrude Lawrence in the greatest triumph of her career. With standees at many performances, Lady in the Dark helped establish the practice of advance ticket sales on the Great White Way, while Paramount Pictures' bid for the film rights broke all records. Lady In The Dark is a musical that is almost forgotten today since it has never been revived on Broadway. My Ship, its most famous song, is considered a standard and the Saga of Jenny is one of the all time great theatre songs. The author tells the story of the creation of this revolutionary musical, its creators, its run on Broadway and national tour and its great star Gertrude Lawrence. From my perspective I would have prefferd less highly technical discussion on music form and construction. I dont know an AABA from ABBA. More background on the Broadway environment of the day would have added to the book. Overall it is a great chapter in the history of American musical theatre and a very enlightening book.
