This volume attempts to identify diseases or groups of related disorders which still present a significant public health problem within the countries of Western Europe. It is argued that the areas chosen have in common the possibility of a major reduction in disease incidence or mortality but that for a variety of reasons such a potential is not being fulfilled. The work concentrates only on those areas where the intervention is seen to be one of health service action as opposed to personal change in life style. Each problem is described in terms of its occurrence within Western Europe with the proposed methods of preventive attack. Available information from scientific studies and routine statistics is then evaluated as to the effect of the individual strategies. In addition, the contribution of economic, social and political constraints in limiting the effectiveness of a particular action is discussed. This work aims to provide a basis for health policy planners and those interested in preventive medicine to formulate realistic policies for disease reduction in the future.
