This was an interesting book, quite different from the author's other ones, which are about real children in real families. The imaginary country she describes is fascinating, with some delightful animals introduced. I found it a gentle, enjoyable story.

A lovely 60s-style fantasy
I've loved this book since childhood, when our school librarian read it to us.The original Haas illustrations are just beautiful. Tatsinda's world is one of intricate beauty & simple charm & of course there is a moral to this story of an 'outsider' who finally wins acceptance. Elizabeth Enright writes charmingly for young people - she also wrote 'Gone Away Lake' & its sequel, 2 more personal faves.
